No Librarian Service or Computing Helpdesk: Monday 7th May

Monday 7th May is a Bank Holiday in the UK so although all Online Library resources should be available as normal, the Library enquiry service and the University Computing Services Helpdesk will not be available. Normal service will resume the following day.

Scopus Downtime Saturday 14th April

Please be advised that maintenance has been scheduled on the Scopus platform for Saturday April 14th, resulting in system downtime. It is anticipated that Scopus will be unavailable for approximately 4 hours, starting at 12:00 PM UK time.

Scopus apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Reference management software RefWorks now freely available from Library

The University Library now subscribe to RefWorks and this is free to use for all University of Liverpool users. RefWorks is an online research management, writing and collaboration tool. It is designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

To access it follow these instructions:

1. First make sure you have set this cookie on your PC to tell Athens that you are a member of the University of Liverpool
2. Go to the RefWorks web site
3. Select 'Login'
4. Select 'Athens users' and login with your Managed Windows Service (MWS) username and password
5. You will now be asked to register. Add your name and email address - YOU MUST USE YOUR UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL EMAIL ADDRESS
6. Select type of user and area of focus

This registers you as a University of Liverpool user and will give you access to RefWorks.

When you create your references choose the Harvard style of referencing.

Library not Available Wednesday 11th April 15.30 - 21.30 UK time

From 15.30 UK time on Wednesday 11th April most of the University's network will be switched off due to remedial work to the electrical power distribution feeding the main University computer suite. Computing Services are hoping to keep some services running including University of Liverpool email but it will be 'at risk'.

The Library server though will be powered off and so will not be usable until much later in the evening (after 21.30 UK time); there will be no access to the catalogue or other Library web pages.

Computing Services apologise for any inconvenience that undertaking this essential work will cause. Last summer there were two incidents which caused the power to services to fail unexpectedly and work had to be undertaken to provide an interim solution. Computing Services and Facilities Management now wish to move forward with a scheme to minimise the risk of a recurrence of these problems.

All services are expected to be fully operational on Thursday April 12th.

ABI/INFORM Select no longer available through Library - use Business Source Premier

Please may I remind everyone that the database ABI/INFORM Select is no longer available from the Library and it has been replaced by the much larger management and business database, Business Source Premier.

This is an excellent source which provides access to the full text for more than 8,800 journals (including Harvard Business Review), as well as market research reports, industry reports, country reports, company profiles and SWOT analyses. It is available from the Management Collections page and there is a short guide to using it.

Don't forget to use the Library Login box to the left of the page to login to Athens using your Managed Windows Service (MWS) username and password before you connect to it.

Library & Computing Services over Easter

The University is closed for the Easter holiday period from Friday 6th April until Monday 9th April (inclusive).

Although all Online Library services should be available, if any system or resource fails during this time this will not be investigated until the morning of Tuesday 10th April.

The Online Librarian will be unavailable from 1700 hours (UK time) on Thursday 5th April until 1100 hours (UK time) on Tuesday 10th April. The Computing Services Helpdesk will be unavailable from 1730 hours (UK time) on Thursday 5th April until 0830 hours (UK time) on Tuesday 10th April.

There are Frequently Asked Questions on the Library web site that may help if you have a problem. The University apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

TRIAL: Global Health database

We have trials of CABI's Global Health database on both the Ovid platform and on CABI's own platform. Global Health covers all aspects of public health at both the international and community level. Its coverage of international and grey literature and an open serials policy mean that 40% of material contained in Global Health is unique to the database

To access this trial off-campus login to Athens and follow the link to Ovid. Our Ovid trial expires on 2nd May 2007.

To access this trial on the CABI platform, go to http://217.154.120.06/GlobalHealthtrial and logon with the trial username and password. Our CABI trial expires on 30th April 2007.
