EZproxy replaces Athens for off-campus access to almost all resources

The Library has updated the library catalogue and the Library collections web pages so that nearly all resources that used to use Athens for off-campus access are now routed via EZproxy. This is possible because EZproxy no longer has problems with firewalls.

Only a handful of resources (none of them e-journals) require an Athens login, and they require it both on- and off-campus. We will soon change our links to these resources so that our link goes straight to our Athens login page.

Get Full Text replaced by 'find it at liverpool'

Our OpenURL service, Get Full Text, powered by LinkFinderPlus has now been replaced by 'find it at liverpool' powered by SFX.

SFX is the market leading OpenURL software from Ex Libris, who absorbed Endeavor Information Systems (the providers of LinkFinderPlus) earlier this year.

Where you have been used to seeing:

You will now see:

When you click on one of the new links, an SFX window will open (we may 'brand' this in the University style later).

If we have full-text access to the required article then SFX will tell you which site(s) you can access it from, and then you just need to click on the GO button for that site to go to the article.

Sometimes SFX cannot link you directly to the article itself, but it will take you to the table of contents for the required journal issue, or just to the journal home page. We will gradually fine-tune SFX so that it can link directly to an even higher proportion of journals.

SFX is able to link to a far wider range of journals than LinkFinderPlus has been able to.

Wherever we have full-text access to the journal, or wherever we have it in print, SFX also offers a link to our catalogue record(s) for that journal.

There is an 'Advanced' area at the foot of the SFX window which will in time offer links to find the required journal in other library catalogues etc. In the meantime, that's where you'll find a link to a form to report problems.

TIP: Despite our best efforts, it is sometimes not possible to maintain a link via EZproxy through all the steps that SFX needs to perform to construct a link to an article. If you are off-campus and are denied access to an article, look to see if 'ezproxy' appears in the URL. If it doesn't, try putting it in as follows:

e.g. for: http://scitation.aip.org/getabs/servlet/GetabsServlet?...

amend it to: http://scitation.aip.org.ezproxy.liv.ac.uk/getabs/servlet/GetabsServlet?...

i.e. insert .ezproxy.liv.ac.uk before the first single slash in the URL.

Acceptable Use of Library E-resources

Please can I remind everyone that there are licensing guidelines regarding the use of electronic Library resources that need to be followed by all University of Liverpool users.

One section particularly relevant to online users is this: 'Licence terms will usually not allow you to mount articles on an internet server'. This means that no one is allowed to upload any articles that have been accessed through the Online Library to the Embanet server.

Links to articles that require the user to authenticate themselves as a University of Liverpool user are allowed, but full text articles from the Library must not be uploaded directly into a class. Many thanks for your co-operation.

Please ask if you have any questions.

Mintel & Key Note Market Reports Change to EZproxy Login

Mintel and Key Note Market Reports have now also been switched from Athens login to EZproxy login. Users of Mintel will be pleased that this means they will no longer to need to click on the Athens login link once in the database to get full access. These databases are available from the Management Collections page.

From the Management Collections page, the Computing Collections page and the Public Health Collections page, you can check to see what login is required, by looking at the 'Password' information next to the database title. Over the next few weeks you will see most of the resources change from Athens authentication to EZproxy authentication.

More Library Resources Change to EZproxy Login

'Single sign-on' access to most Library e-resources off-campus moves one step closer today. As part of the switch to EZproxy authentication for most Athens authenticated Library resources the following databases have also now been changed to EZproxy authentication:

  • Emerald Fulltext
  • Cambridge Journals Online
  • JSTOR
  • ScienceDirect
  • Scopus
This should make access to content easier as there will no longer be the need to click on an Athens login link once in the resource. This often caused confusion and meant that users experienced difficulties viewing the full text of articles.

As mentioned earlier today, Business Source Premier has already been switched to EZproxy login.

After trying the Small Business Resource Centre please leave a comment.

Business Source Premier - now EZproxy login

Business Source Premier is one of the first Athens authenticated databases to be switched to EZproxy authentication in our move to provide single sign-on access to most of our e-resources off-campus.

When you go to access Business Source Premier from the Management Collections Page, you will see that the password information now says 'EZproxy'. So just login to EZproxy with your MWS username and password using the Library Login box, select the 'Connect' link for Business Source Premier and you will get access.

If you have any questions about this please email me, Stephanie Allen Online_Librarian@embanet.com

EZproxy Upgrade Eliminates Firewall Problems

Good news! The University Computing Services have moved EZproxy to new hardware and upgraded the EZproxy software to a new version. One major benefit of this upgrade is that EZproxy no longer conflicts with firewalls so users off-campus will find off-campus access much easier.

The Library appreciate that many users find Athens confusing, so we will eliminate the need for it wherever possible. Over the next couple of months we will start linking to most Athens-authenticated resources via EZproxy instead, so that EZproxy will in effect provide single sign-on access to most of our e-resources off-campus.

The new version of EZproxy also includes a number of security measures that will help us to ensure that our e-resources are used in accordance with licence terms and conditions.

Keep watching the Library News blog for more information.

Secret Question and Answer

Since September 2005, anyone registering for a University of Liverpool Managed Windows Service (MWS) username and email account is asked to set a secret question and answer. This can be used to verify your identity with the Computing Services Helpdesk in cases such as a forgotten MWS password. If you have not previously set a secret question or wish to change the one you did set, please go to: http://liv.ac.uk/mwssecretquestion.

Access to this page requires your Managed Windows Service (MWS) username & password. Please contact the University Computing Services Helpdesk if you have any questions about this: helpdesk@liverpool.ac.uk
